To be honest, vampires, werewolves, fairies, and the ilk have never been my favourite choice of reading material, but I was so glad I didn't let that stop me from trying She Lights Up The Dark, by A. M. Manay. This is a superb novel and one I enjoyed immensely.
Having not read the first book in the series was no great issue for me in reading this story. Manay introduced me to a range of characters that were fascinating, to say the least. It took me a little time to get my head around who was who and what type of fantasy creature they were, but it was full steam ahead after that.
The heroine of the story, November Snow, is a recently turned vampire who is struggling with adapting to her new life as a Vampire. The supporting characters in this story are a fascinating bunch of vampires, werewolves, and fairies, who all have their place within this tale. I particularly enjoyed the two arch-enemy antagonists, Nigel and Luka. Both characters display traits that at times make the reader despise and hate them and yet at other times empathise with their positions.
One of the great things about this story, in my opinion, was the idea that the different species, including humans, didn't have to live in a state of perpetual ignorance, or fear, of each other. The idea of love between the species and even interbreeding was indeed intriguing.
I found Manay's writing to be very clear, straightforward and easy to read. She Lights Up the Dark was indeed one of those books that was impossible to put down. I just had to know what happened next. With a nice cliffhanger, it will be great to see what Book 3 in the series has to offer. I, for one, will be popping back to read Book One and discover more about November Snow, before she became a Vampire.
This is the sort of book that has the potential to open up the genre to people who might not have considered it, their "cup of tea" before. Kudos to Manay for that. A great book and well worth every one of the five stars I've awarded it.

By all means, do pop on over to Amazon and check out the entire November Snow series. I know I will be:

dynasty of deceit: A SHOWBIZ FAMILY DRAMA (ROYAL COMMAND BOOK 3) BY SARAH STUART

Dynasty of Deceit is the third and final book in the Royal Command trilogy, chronicling the rise and rise of the Marsh family in showbusiness, headlined by the inimitable Diamond Superstar himself, Michael Marsh.
I have read all three and enjoyed all three, but I can honestly say the third book in the series is the best of them all. There's no tapering off in this finale. It is action-packed, full of lies, half-truths and deceit, as are all three books and it is a good old-fashioned "whodunnit" to boot. Who killed Lissie Marsh, wife of the family patriarch and mother of Lisette Marsh?
When the age-old accusations of incest between Michael and his daughter come to life again, the Marsh family rallies around to defeat them and continue to hide the horrible truth they've been guarding for so many years.
All three books play off against the overriding story of the infamous Book of Hours, handed down by Mary Tudor, through the female line of the family. The book had one simple royal command to the woman of the family; "Find love where ye may". Can the legacy of Queen Mary still be carried on and fulfilled amidst the ever present allegations of incest?
Dynasty of Deceit beautifully ties up all the strands of this incredible story and brings them together to a satisfactory conclusion for this reader. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes their romance with a bit of hot spice. The authors handling of the consensual incestuous relationship within the book is well done, without either glorifying nor condemning what happened between Michael and Lisette.
A fantastic series, and an excellent book - I highly recommend Dynasty of Deceit.

the god gene (age of abundance book 2) by dean C. Moore

This is book two in the Age of Abundance Series by Dean C. Moore. When I'd finished book one, I remember sitting back and thinking to myself; "wow, how little is my imagination and how little I actually understood the science and pseudo-science of the book." My respect for the author and his grasp of the topic has only grown, whilst reading book two.
I don't pretend, for a second, to still grasp many of the concepts and futuristic predictions or ideas portrayed in this story, but that doesn't detract from the book's appeal as a read. Moore covers some excellent topics and addresses some interesting "big" questions about life, purpose, relationships, individuality, the greater good, and our relationship with faith.
Despite my ignorance of the topic, it was Moore's excellent writing and the pondering of those questions that kept me enthralled in this book. Will I ever become a dedicated futuristic reader? Will I ever grasp the concept of transhumanism, nanites, and a hyper-connected world? Possibly not! But, would I read more Dean C. Moore, just for the stories - for sure!
If you are already  a devotee of this type of futuristic, science melding with pseudo-science, quantum physics, and parallel universes et al, you will absolutely love this book and this series. For those of us, on the cusp of this strange, new world, we can still enjoy the excellent story-telling skills of a clever author.
For this reason, The God Gene garners a solid four stars from this reviewer.

big flipping deal by ian saul whitcomb

I have to admit that when I picked up Ian Saul Whitcomb's, Big Flipping Deal, I had no real idea of the subject matter of the story, beyond knowing that it was a Whitcomb, so it would probably be erotica of some description. I'm not a big reader of erotica, as I find it a little same old... same old, if you know what I mean, but I had enjoyed Whitcomb's books in the past, so was excited to see what this one focused on.
The subject matter was a surprise - a relationship between a Transgender woman and a straight man. The two main characters, Lindsey and Nick are initially thrown together, after Lindsey's Aunt and Nick's neighbour leaves them half her house each after she dies. The question is, do they want to sell it now and split the small profits, or do they want to do it up, together and make significantly more when they sell.
Nick is instantly drawn to the drop-dead gorgeous Lindsey and the idea of working side by side with her on this "fixer-upper" for a few months holds immense appeal. The excitement starts when Lindsey reveals to Nick that she was originally a he and still is in some vital respects, having not gone the whole gender reassignment route. For Nick, who has always thought of himself as "totally straight", this revelation opens up a new avenue of thought.
The idea of T-Girls, Ladyboys, whatever you choose to call them, has long fuelled many a male fantasy and I was interested to see how Whitcomb would handle the sexual tension and dynamic in this story.
I found the story real, believable and full of honest and raw emotion. The self-discovery that Nick went through on this journey was handled beautifully by the author. The actual erotica was well written and superbly realistic.
I have to say, I enjoyed this erotica book more than most I have read in the past. It asked some serious questions about our perceptions and to a large part answered them extraordinarily well. If erotica is your thing, or indeed if you fancy trying something a little different and broadening your horizons, then Big Flipping Deal is the book for you. Unlike some erotica, it is a good, solid, 140 pages, with an enjoyable backstory and non-erotic scenes also.
It is fully deserving of the full five stars I'm giving it here.
