May Jackie Panayi - The Eclectic Indie!

Picture
In today's Indie Spotlight, I want to introduce you to a British Author whose works I have become fascinated with over the past year. Her name is May Jackie Panayi and as the title indicates she has written books across a number of genres, both fiction and non-fiction.

May first came to my attention when I read an "how to book" of hers about witchcraft. For a writer, this book struck me as an incredibly invaluable resource; as it detailed everything you ever wanted to know about "Wica", but were afraid to ask - from a personal experience perspective.

I have since gone on to read two more of May's books; Four to Dawn and Malbed Mews, both of which have intrigued me for totally different reasons.

Malbed Mews is out and out horror/paranormal. It is filled with delightful characters, plenty of suspense, action and oddball scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed May's style and would highly recommend this book.

Four to Dawn was fascinating, for other reasons completely, which I won't elucidate on here, as it might spoil the surprise. Needless to say, I was well satisfied when I turned the last page on this book.

I am thrilled today to have the opportunity to interview May and get some inkling of what goes on inside this eclectic indie writer's brain. Please join me as we explore the intricacies of the world that is May Jackie Panayi!

Picture
1/ When and how did you first realise you wanted to be an author?

I wrote a poem when I was five and my Mum sent it to the local paper, who printed it. That kicked things off I guess. At seven I started writing a little magazine for a friend, but her Dad who was a Councilor used to look forward to reading it instead. My Uncle worked at Reuters News Agency. I thought for a while I wanted to be a journalist. Then I started writing poems and short stories for competitions. It just always stayed with me, I suppose.

2/ What authors have influenced you the most and who are your favourite authors?

Well I could try and be really highbrow here and list the literary greats; but when I curl up with a good book, my favourites are; Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Clive Barker. I really enjoy a good Joanne Harris too.  Stephen King is my writing guru; he’s so prolific so readable, and so popular. His book, On Writing, is something I would recommend for all authors. Other influences include J.G. Ballard, George Orwell, Ray Bradbury, Clifford D. Simak... too many to list really. I read prolifically and constantly, so favourites change a lot. But I always enjoy settling down with something new by a core favourite.

3/ What excites you most about writing?

Excites? Writing doesn’t really excite me. Selling books does! I feel inspired by writing. It’s something I have to work through and get out of my system, like a virus. A book irritates me like a stone in my shoe until I get it written. I’ve currently got seven stones in my shoe; which is pretty annoying as I don’t write that fast!

Picture
4/ What is the best book you’ve read in 2015?

One best book- really? Just A Drop In The Ocean by Grant Leishman was pretty darn brilliant. Blind Faith by Ben Elton stuck with me big time too, as did The Embroiderer by Kathryn Gauci.

5/ Your books seem to cover no discernible genre. I described you as an eclectic author. What motivates the direction of your stories?

It’s just whichever idea needs to come out first. I don’t really have much control over it. I’d like to say I’ve covered all the genres I’m going to, but that’s just not true. I’m currently writing Return to Aegos which is the second book in the Sun series, set in Greece. Then I have The Intensity of Movement, which is a very dark book about immigration and the dark side of people. Then I have a second collection of short stories coming up; Tales from the Library of a Twisted Mind. I also have an adult comedy about a group of Hippies in Space, an erotic story called Magenta, an adventure about Climate Change, and the third and final in the Sun series, In Search of Small Treasures. So, I’m staying with the eclectic I suppose.

6/ You have some awesome characters in your books – which one is your favourite and why?

I really like Guy from Malbed Mews; he’s the animus to my anima maybe. But my favourite has to be Ella Hudson [Ella Zacharoulis in Return to Aegos] from Sun, Sea and Secrets. She is everything I’d love to be; confident, optimistic, gregarious, and she eats and eats, and stays slim and gorgeous!

Picture
7/ At the end of Four to Dawn you made a very personal disclosure; no spoilers. What was it like opening yourself up to such public scrutiny by doing that?

Oh God! It still makes me cringe thinking about people reading it. It’s like walking on stage naked. I try not to think about it too much, but I’m glad I did it. It did purge a lot of stuff for me and allow me to move on.

8/ Is your writing cathartic for you? Please describe how your life experiences make your writing more potent.

Yes, as mentioned previously, it is cathartic. All life experiences are grist to the writer’s mill. Something happens in my life, I file it away for use in a book. For example, a couple of months ago, I watched a woman jump from a fifth floor balcony, committing suicide. It’s going in a book. Recently I had the experience of being a victim of racial abuse and had to go to the police. That experience and the feelings it brought, are going in a book. My life is a series of mental notes for books.

9/ Tell us one oddball thing (only one May!) about yourself and one mundane thing.

Okay, oddball...When I’m relaxing in the evening in front of the TV I do a collection of strange sofa dances and animal impressions, randomly, like a kind of controlled tourettes. It amuses my hubby no end. We both generally end up laughing. I don’t know why I do it, it’s just fun. Or maybe it lets the madness vent out a bit! I have considered filming it for YouTube and seeing if it goes viral, but I’m not ready yet for that kind of exposure.

Mundane...I love to cook. I like following recipes in books, and I like inventing my own stuff too.

10/ Who edits your books and how do you handle quality control?

I do first and third edit. Hubby reads and edits the second time. How much can you ever do as an Indie?

Picture
11/ How do you handle criticism of your work?

I don’t like it, who does? People say they want honest criticism and feedback, but when you give it they get defensive. Most people aren’t honest with themselves or don’t know themselves truly. I don’t mind helpful comments, if I can use them I will. I have learnt to ignore trolls, I do get a bit upset when I load an xls report and see a couple of returns; but out of hundreds, nay thousands, it’s nothing really. Even Stephen King gets trollish bad reviews. It only annoys me, because one bad review on top, can stop sales dead for a few days. That the trolls have that power in the indie system, makes me want to spit bricks.

12/ What advice would you have for aspiring authors?

Write, write and keep writing. Don’t stop. If you get blocked write something else, even a blog. I recently have been forming a new habit; it takes 21 days to form a habit apparently. I’m on day 18. It is, to write in the morning before I do anything else like turn my internet on, or go out in the world. It means nothing has a chance to affect my mood before I write. Less likelihood of block. My mind and then life, has thrown a lot at me in this 18 days, but I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now, I’m going to make it. It seems to be working.

13/ What is your favourite and least favourite thing about being a writer?

The independence from a workplace and a boss is my favourite thing. Least favourite thing is having to do my own promotion. It’s a whole other job that I didn’t sign up for. Sadly it’s the way the writing world works these days. Hopefully I’m over the hardest part of the learning curve.

Picture
14/ What makes you laugh?

Stuff that’s a bit out there I suppose. I laughed till I cried recently at a picture of a cat dressed in a white head dress and bomb belt. The cats freaking out at cucumbers video made me howl too. But it’s not just cats. I’m currently re-watching the series, Absolutely Fabulous, that makes me laugh lots. The alcoholic downstairs shouting something that for all the world sounded like "furry white women" made tears roll down my face, I laughed so hard. Lots of things really, but the world being crazy weird is the funniest.

15/ If you could have six people (living or dead) around for dinner, who would they be and why?

Johnny Depp, and not just because he would look pretty at the table! I’d like to talk to him about mental illness, as he has a thing for picking roles with disturbed characters. Also I’d like to talk to him about one of his more obscure films that is really great; called The Brave, and related to that, about his Native American heritage.

Stephen King because I’d want to chat lots about writing, his dark and twisted ideas, and his recovery from his near death experience.

Joanna Lumley because she has had a really interesting life, and although she clearly came from a privileged beginning, is really down to earth and seems genuinely nice.

Eddie Izzard because not only would he have everyone in stitches with his surreal humour, but he is an inspired and dedicated human of amazing stamina too. I’d love to talk about the things he pushes himself to do, like running.

Prince Charles, I think would be really interesting. He has interest in environment, architecture and organic gardening, I’d like to talk to him about all those things. Also he seems to have spent all his life waiting, which has to make him interesting to talk to. He has seen a different side of the world than the rest of us.

Can I invite God? Now that would make for some interesting dinner conversation! What to feed him though? Too stressful to cook, I’d have to get caterers. What a thing to put on your CV... caterers to God!

16/ Final question – Why should our readers buy a May Jackie Panayi book?

Rachel McGrath - This Girl's Got Talent!

Today's spotlight spins around and around before coming to rest on a new, rising star, "indie" author whose work and style captivated me from the very first pages of her poignant, at times sad, but always hopeful, memoir of her and her husband's struggle with early miscarriage.

It certainly wasn't a topic I'd had terribly much to do with, or indeed thought a hell of a lot about, but Rachel McGrath opened my eyes to the true trauma this creates in many couples and the journey so many people have to endure before receiving the blessing of their very own "Rainbow Child."

I've mentioned often enough in this blog that one of the things I love about "indie" authors is their sense of camaraderie. It's almost like we're all together in this incredibly tough struggle to overcome the biggest problem facing "indie" authors - obscurity. Rachel is one of these people who go out of their way to help fellow "indie" authors - Moi included.

So, without further ado please allow me to introduce you to one of the new breed of "indie" writers - a woman with heart, soul and a whole bunch of stories to tell. Drum roll please - Rachel McGrath!

Picture
1/ When did you discover you wanted to write?

I have always wanted to write. In fact, I have short stories I had written at the age of fourteen (and they are quite funny now to read). I remember I loved the classics, but even more so I loved Virginia Andrews (don’t judge!). I have a lot of short stories from my teenage years which are very ‘Virginia Andrews-esqe’ style. For a naïve, young, girl, I certainly knew how to elaborate on sexuality.  Unfortunately, however, life and ambition got in the way of my creativity, and whilst I always felt I had a book in me (and I started many over the years), ‘Finding the Rainbow’ was my inspiration for me to come back to writing! I am however glad that I have started now, as I am a very different writer to what I was in those teenage years!

2/ Your first book; 'Finding the Rainbow', was clearly a very personal story. What prompted you to write this?

At first it wasn’t a book, it was my solace and a way of capturing my turmoil. I had never imagined that I would deal with the fertility struggles that I faced; let alone how many losses we did experience. Before long, it was a longer piece of work, and something I felt passionate about capturing. I had wanted to keep my experiences recorded, so that when we did finally have a successful pregnancy I would never forget what made us parents and the journey we had travelled to get there. Unfortunately we are not yet parents, but now this book is something that reminds me of the strength you need to overcome adversity; that love and partnership are fundamental to achieving your dreams; and that sometimes your dreams are not always what you had thought they would be and happiness can be found in different paths.

3/ Finding the Rainbow, opened up a big part of your life to a group of total strangers. How did you deal with exposing your feelings, so openly, in this memoir?

That one is certainly still an interesting question that I ponder on. Firstly I did change my name, as I thought at first I could have two personas.  Well, I don’t, and the McGrath persona has become more me than my real name. Secondly, I realised that people buy books because of the person not the book title, so I had to get comfortable talking openly about my fertility. It is strange when someone you do not know starts to talk about your experiences in the book and naturally asks what is next on our journey. By writing my book, I have invited the world to comment on our family plans, so I certainly can no longer be shy about it!

Picture
As a reader, what type of books get you excited?

Had you asked me over a year ago, I was quite a conservative reader, sticking to similar genres.  Now I have written my own book and connected with so many great independent authors, I’ve truly widened my reading appreciation.  Now I get excited about new books; ones I may not have picked up in a book store, but those that really surprise me. I can name several books recently that have taken my breath away, and most recently (and this is not a biased comment) by the very talented Grant Leishman, ‘Just A Drop in the Ocean’!  There are other great independent authors out there that I have truly enjoyed (Bill Ward, Jana Pekten, Jalpa Williby, Colin Griffiths, to name a few).

5/ You have followed up Finding the Rainbow, with two children’s books; Mud on Your Face and The Wonderful World of Willow. What prompted you to write those two books?

Mud on your Face was actually something I wrote just over three years ago. However, it needed work, and I lost my mojo at the time and continued on my corporate path. After Finding the Rainbow and the appreciation I was receiving for this book, I decided to revisit the story. So I rewrote it in the way I had first intended and contacted a very talented illustrator. To be honest, it was something I always wanted to publish but I just needed the guts to do it.

The Wonderful World of Willow is a younger children’s book series, and will become a series (hopefully). It will tell the stories of my own cat, Willow; and my dog, CocoPops in a way that children will hopefully enjoy and connect to. I love the children’s market it is so much fun and there is so much room for fantasy!

6/ What do you enjoy the most about being an Author?

I love that I can put my crazy imaginations down onto paper and create a story that will hopefully resonate or connect with someone I have never met. I love to write, I have always loved stories, and this is my own personal way of expressing myself! It is absolutely liberating.

Picture
7/ What do you find the hardest thing about being an Author?

At the moment, it is balancing my writing with my ‘day job’ which is quite a busy day job. I work in a global corporate company in quite a senior role. I have been incredibly ambitious about my career, and my job involves long hours and lots of travel. Lately, however, I am trying to fit my writing around my career, and that has been difficult (particularly when you are on a fast creative train of thought). Sometimes it has involved little sleep and no rest on my weekends – but it is worth it! In many ways, it has helped me switch off from the pressures of my day job, but I’m not sure how sustainable both will be!

8/ Who are your favorite authors and what authors if any, influence your style?

Again this has truly changed over the past twelve months. I used to love Stephen King, Nora Roberts and even classics like Jane Austen and Margaret Mitchell. Now I have to say I’m more inclined to look up a new and independent author, as they truly are hidden gems who constantly surprise me.

9/ What is the favourite book you’ve read in 2015?

Okay this one is an even tie for sure.  I absolutely loved Jalpa Williby’s ‘My Perfect Imperfections’ and I’m not just saying this because of the interviewer, but I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Just A Drop in the Ocean.’

'My Perfect Imperfections' was a story that shook me. I guess I have been somewhat fortunate in many ways to not have had to face a family member with a disability, but also in many ways I was also naïve. This story of a young girl living with cerebral palsy was just heartbreaking and at times brutal. I loved every page.

'Just A Drop in the Ocean', also a brilliant read for many different reasons. It shows how human nature wants to love and be loved; how life plans can get in the way of reality; how we can think we are taking one short cut and suddenly we land in deep, hot, water with no escape. It was about love, hope and finding yourself through adversity. I was smitten with the characters and enthralled with every page.

PictureAlf Stewart From "Home and Away"
10/ Tell us one oddball thing about yourself and tell us one mundane thing.

Oddball? Okay so my first job was as a party clown at Burger King! I am generally shy but dress me up and suddenly I become someone else entirely – it's like I’m Batman versus Bruce Wayne! Well, not exactly but you get the gist!

Mundane?  I am so very frugal I am a planner. I like spreadsheets, to do lists and to know what is happening when and where. I like to be on time and I get frustrated when things don’t go to plan…. Obsessive compulsive? No not me?!!

11/ What makes Rachel McGrath laugh?

Really dumb jokes. Like what do you call a three legged donkey . . . . . a wonkey! Yep, I love it, in fact, I’m giggling to myself now!

12/ If you could have six people (living or dead) around for dinner, who would they be and why?

Okay, I love this stuff.

1. Anne Boleyn (with the head) – I want to know what really happened
2. Steve Irwin – and he needs to bring a big croc!
3. Alf Stewart (from Home and Away for those who watch Australian soap operas… ‘flamin' galahs’)
4. Shakespeare – I love my Shakespeare and can recite several of the monologues!
5. Elizabeth I – because I think Anne B should meet her very successful and revered daughter
6. Dick Van Dyke – because I just love him!

13/ Print or EBook and why?

Until recently I would have definitely said print. I love taking 4-5 books on holidays but they are a pain to pack and then sometimes they do get all tatty and I leave them behind. So now I’m starting to find the love for the eBook. I just bought myself a Kindle and I’m getting used to it….not there yet but I’m sure I will be soon!

Picture
14/ Based on what I’ve seen so far, you probably haven’t had to deal with this much, but how do you handle criticism of your work?

My day job is a Human Resources Leader – so I actually deal with criticism, conflict every day, so I am quite used to it on a professional level.

Criticism of my writing I think is different. I guess it depends on whether it is constructive and objective versus personal. It’s a tough one as you put your heart and soul into the book you write and you hope that people would be sensitive with their feedback. In a way, the criticism can feel like someone is telling you that your baby is ugly. It hurts.

15/ Finding the Rainbow was beautifully written, did you edit it yourself? How do you handle quality control?

My mother was my primary editor and then the publisher did some edits too. I must have also read it a dozen times – to the point where I really struggled to re-read my own story over and over. Because it is my story it was like living every moment over, again and again.

16/ Final Question: What does 2016 hold for Rachel McGrath – Author? What can we look forward to coming from your laptop next year?

I have a few projects on the go, and I guess it is about timing.

I have a sequel to my children’s book, called ‘CocoPops the Crazy Pup’, due in January.

I also have an anthology of short stories that will hopefully be published early in the new year. This will be a piece of work that will be dedicated to my father, and all proceeds will go to cancer research. The main challenge I am finding right now is a charity that will partner with me!

Then, I have lots of ideas, it's just getting time to put them on paper. Truly I’m excited about this great world of writing and the ability to be heard. I love every moment and this is only the beginning!

So there we have it - the very talented, the very busy and the very excited "Indie" star Rachel McGrath.

Thank you so much for your time Rachel and your open and frank responses. I'm sure we all know a lot more about you than we did before.

Please do check out Rachel's work.

It's All About Me!

In this week's blog I am going to unashamedly wallow in self-promotion, self-aggrandizement and introspection. It's been a while since I've focused one of my blogs on myself and my work; so today is my opportunity.

As we near the end of this year, with just two more months left in 2015, it is an appropriate time to consider what I have achieved or indeed not achieved in this, my first year as a serious, full-time author.

As is always the best, with these things, it is appropriate to start at the beginning - and the beginning for me, is and always will be; The Second Coming!

Picture
THE SECOND COMING:

The Second Coming will always be a special book for me. This was my first baby, conceived in love, nurtured for many months in the womb and finally induced into the world on June 15, 2015. The Second Coming was an enormous learning experience for me. I had no idea how to go about writing something as monumental as a novel. All I had, in my head; was an idea, a beginning and an end. Filling in that pesky bit in the middle, was the hard part.

I learnt so much about writing, about discipline and most importantly about all the peripherals that are just as important as writing; editing, publishing, marketing, et al. I know I came out of the process as a much better writer and I also produced a novel I could be proud of. The day The Second Coming was published still ranks up there as one of the greatest days of my life.

The Second Coming is a warm, funny, and very inspirational re-telling of the Greatest Story Ever Told. To date, it has garnered twenty-three, four and five-star reviews, on Amazon. The reader's response to this tale of a modern-day return by Jesus, to earth, has been incredibly positive. Readers from all parts of the spectrum of faith have commented that the book succeeds in walking that fine line between religion and secularity. It is a fun, inspirational, tale of adventure and camaraderie, spiced up with a wonderfully, touching and beautiful romance between two of the main characters. It is not a religious book, it is a book that celebrates the power and beauty of the human spirit.

Please do check out The Second Coming. It is available on Amazon, Google Play and IBooks.

JUST A DROP IN THE OCEAN:

When I finished The Second Coming, I still had no intentions of turning it into a trilogy; that came much later. I sat down and decided to write a totally different book; fundamentally a love story and the result was Just A Drop in the Ocean.

Just A Drop in the Ocean tells the story of two very different people, Teresa Mercado from the rural, backwaters of Occidental Mindoro, The Philippines and Nick Stevenson from Napier, New Zealand. They connected as pen-pals in the 1970's and by the time they were in their late teens they had their future lives together all mapped out; until that pesky thing called life, stepped in to ruin their dreams.

Just A Drop in the Ocean follows their separate lives as they both search for that elusive dream - happiness.

Through the trials and tribulations of domestic violence, political chicanery, the criminal underworld, fraud, prison and personal redemption, they both reflect on whether that sweet, innocent, first love, of their childhood was indeed their true destiny.

Just A Drop in the Ocean is a towering story, that spans two continents and several decades as Teresa and Nick, both seek their true love in life.

Published in October 2015, Just A Drop in the Ocean is available from all good online stores, but please do check it out on Amazon:

RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST:

Once I decided there was more to tell in the story of JC's return to earth; I started work on Rise of the AntiChrist, the second book in The Second Coming series.

In the second book, JC and Maria's eldest twins, Damien and Samantha, have become the focus of their parent's mission to continue saving humanity from the brink. Both children have amazing powers, inherited from their father. That; plus their engaging personalities, continue to promote and ensure the success of JC's, brave new world on Earth.

Storm clouds are gathering on the horizon though as we see the escape and release into the world of "the evil one"; Satan, the Devil, Beelzebub, call him what you will - although he prefers to be known simply as "Bubba".

In a fast-paced, story, full of action, adventure, and excitement, we see the rise, on Earth, of Beelzebub's new human representative; The AntiChrist! How will JC, his family and his disciples overcome this challenge to the established order? Are we on the verge of  "Holy War"?

Rise of the AntiChrist; like The Second Coming, will be published by Pentian Publishing, with a release date set for early December 2015. As with my first book investors are encouraged to back Rise of the AntiChrist with a direct stake in the publication of this book. All investors will receive a royalty from EVERY single sale of this book. This is Pentian's unique point of difference in the publishing, crowd-funding, market.

If you would like to be part of the publishing world and make some money from your investment, please do check out the opportunity here: http://pentian.com/book/fund/1339  You will need to move quick though as this project ends on November 14th. Be in and back a winner.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

I have completed about 15,000 words on the third book in The Second Coming series; Holy War and I hope to have that finished and ready to submit to the publisher by March 2016. I have actually put this aside for now to work on a project that is very near and dear to my heart.

As many readers will know, my son Christopher is a very talented writer in his own right and I have been itching to help him get some of his work published. We are currently putting together an anthology of horror and paranormal short-stories (his forte), which we aim to have published before Christmas 2015.

I am incredibly excited about doing a joint book with my son and am working hard to produce the necessary content to make it a wonderful book. Chris has already furnished me with some stunning stories that will make the book incredibly exciting and readable, so the pressure is now on me to perform. I am loving the opportunity to write in a genre that I am not that familiar with and am learning so much through this experience.

Please do check out Christopher's wonderful website where he writes some fascinating blogs about movies, graphic novels, gaming, superheroes, and so much more besides. He calls his website The Unemployed Writer, but I suspect his unemployment will not last for long. He is a very talented young man - and yes, I am biased!

INTROSPECTION AND REFLECTION:

So, how has 2015 treated me as an author?

Have I become a best-selling author overnight? NO
Have I been discovered amongst the morass of other "indie" authors? NO
Am I happy? YES!

At the age of 56, I have finally achieved personal fulfillment and peace of mind. The discovery of this latent passion within myself has given me a totally new lease on life, from which I will never look back. I say it continuously, but that's because it's TRUE. "I AM LIVING THE DREAM!"

2015 has taught me many things. It has taught me to be humble, to be patient and most of all to be respectful of other's work.

This is an amazing industry that I have launched myself into, full of wonderful and helpful people. I cannot stress enough how positive and supportive the world of "indie" authors really is. I have met some fantastic people in the past year and am continually amazed and in awe of their towering abilities as writers. Forget the Legacy Published authors and treat yourself to some of the best literature out today. Read an "indie" author today!

Finally, I need to say; none of this would ever have been possible without the incredible, unconditional, love and support of my best friend, my lover, my darling wife; Thess. She is the most giving person I have ever met and it is her never-ending faith and belief in me that has given me my personal redemption.

Her favorite saying is: "Something great is just around the corner". Well, my darling, as far as I'm concerned, something great is already here - YOU! Thank you, my love, from the depths of my being.

Till next week, thanks for reading, have a peace filled day and:

CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY!

EMBRACE THE OPPORTUNITIES LIFE PRESENTS TO YOU AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

Have a great life and spread the love!
